Art Mapping (Day One)
Step One: Photography & Tate Collection
You have been given a work from the Tate Collection showing somewhere near Tate Britain. Find the location and see how close you can get to the scene depicted. Try to stand in the artist’s shoes or maybe locate yourself within the work. Take and post a photograph to show this view or to mark what you’ve experienced
Step Two: Video
Stop in a safe location and turn on video function. Choose a height to hold your phone, then turn in a circle moving your phone with you and recording your surroundings until you have made a full circle. Limit your video to maximum one minute long. Play back your video and pause at a point you like. Take a screenshot of your frozen image if you can and choose a word to accompany it. Post the video and the screenshot accompanied by your word. If you can’t take a screenshot write in text with the video the time point at which to pause the video and the accompanying word.
Step Three: Sound
You need pen, paper and audio record function. Sit somewhere and tune in to the sounds around you. Set your audio recorder to record the sounds you hear for a minute. At the same time try to create a visual sound map by representing the sounds with diagrams or drawings. Take a photo of your drawing and post it with the accompanying audio recording.
Step Four: Photography
Choose a landmark you can see and search for it online at http://www.tate.org.uk/art. Choose one of the works that comes up in your search and take photo inspired by it. Post a link to the original work along with your photo.
Step Five: Note-taking
Stop, look and listen for one minute. Write down five words that come to mind in those moments then make a note of one memory that is brought to mind concerning the place you’re in or a place it reminds you of. Post your five words and notes of the memory.
Step Six: Note-taking & Tate Collection
Sit somewhere quiet and take in your surroundings. Close your eyes and think about what the place you are in reminds you of. Use that memory as the stimulus to search http://www.tate.org.uk/art for a piece of work. Choose a piece uncovered by your search that means something to you and post a link to your chosen piece with a brief description explaining your connection, thinking about a sense of place.
Step Seven: Mapping
Post the map you have created of your journey in whatever format you chose. And make your way back for 15.45!
